Abstract
In Navarre, to date, there had only been sporadic sightings and non-systematic captures of pond terrapins, but no population analysis of this species had been carried out. In this study two European pond terrapin populations located in protected sites, 10 km away from each other, were analyzed biometrically. Most of the individuals were captured using shrimp and floating traps, but some of them were also captured by hand. For almost a year, 71 individuals of E. orbicularis were captured in the SCI of Badina Escudera (Villafranca), over about 1.5 km, whereas in a small pond (40 m) inside Bardenas Reales Natural Park 61 individuals were captured in only four days. Given that the pond represents a tiny part of the area occupied by the species, we can assume that the population from Bardenas Reales has an important density of terrapins. Even more, the population in this site seems to be well structured, with 49.2% of the captured individuals with a dorsal length below 120 mm. Although in the pond from Villafranca a great number of individuals were captured, only 12.7% of them were less than 120 mm in length. Sex ratio in both populations is close to 1:1.
