Abstract
A national strategy has been promoted in order to establish the technical basis for managing and protecting both wild turtle and tortoise populations and captive stocks in Mexico. We aim to assure the permanence of viable populations in areas where available habitat exists. Our working scheme calls for a regionalization approach to maximize current efforts in key areas. We are creating a database with updated information for every species to reach the short-term goal of analyzing the status of the 40+ species of Mexican freshwater and tortoises present. In 2006, we began organizing individuals from academic institutions, government representatives, NGO´s, national protected areas, and Ramsar sites to promote turtle and tortoise conservation. We hope to make national and international agreements via this strategy. There will also be the potential for sustainable activities.
