Testudinidae Testudo hermanni A survey by the capture-recapture method has been made on a population of the Mediterranean tortoise in a valley of Serra Balmeta (Eastern Pyrenees, Catalonia), contemplating mainly the parameters of population density and structure. A density of 10.95 individuals/Ha has been fixed with 30% are subadults lesser than 100 mm in length. A forestal fire spreading while the field work was being carried out, has made possible a study of its consequences on population density and structure. Death rate was 30.4% of the population, affecting chiefly adult females (22%) and subadult individuals (39.1%).
