Abstract |
Individuals of Chrysemys picta from Nantucket Island possess characters of C. p. picta and C. p. marginata. This population is considerably east and south of previously known intergrade populations in New England. It is proposed that a C. p. picta × marginata intergrade population, or possibly a C. p. marginata population, dispersed in postglacial times eastward in southern and central New England, and along formerly emergent continental shelf areas to what is now Nantucket Island. C. p. marginata characteristics may survive on Nantucket Island because of relatively early isolation; these characteristics may have become swamped out in other localities.
