Abstract |
The knowledge about the current status of Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758)insome regions of Southern Italy is incomplete. The author illustrates the distribution of Emys orbicularis (L.) populations in the Salento region (Southern Apulia - Italy).Fifteen sites have been studied and censussed, of which at least eight are inhabited by reproductive populations. All the examined localities are situated along the coast of Salento Peninsula and everywhere the presence of at least small populations of E. orbicularis has been confirmed. Several of these populations may be facing extinction risk in the near future. A historical analysis of the state of the wet zones in the Salentian Peninsula throughout the last century is presented, as well as the causes of the progressive decline of the species in the region.
