Abstract |
Abstract Reptilies of the order Testudines—turtles—are one of the most vulnerable and threatened groups of terrestrial vartebrates. Cases of their invasion or reintroduction are infrequent and have only local importance. However, there is a striking exception. The slider turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans, not only displaces an obvious tendency to expansion in its native region in North America , but also has been penetrating into the fauna of more and more new countries on all continents in recent decades . Up-to-date information on the appearance of slider turtles in the wild of our Northern European neighbors and the findings of this species in the Moscow region (see below) point to the topicality of this problem also for fauna of Russia.
