Abstract     
Testudinidae Terrestrial Tortoises are considered in France as exotic pets. In the Angevine region, the Society for the Protection of Tortoises of the West (SPTW) is managed by owners of Testudo hermanni, T. graeca and T. horsfieldii species of tortoises. Annual meetings are organized for the mating of the tortoises. During the May 2000 meeting, the author sampled shell of the tortoises (taking 53 scales and swabs from visible lesions) in order to study the fungal skin condition, and also the stools (from 55 healthy tortoises) in order to study the digestive parasitism. Cutaneous samples were seeded onto two different culture media: YPDA with chloramphenicol for the cottonswabs and YPDA with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide (1g/1) for the scales. Numerous fungi were isolated from the scales of tortoises (45 genera). Some had never been reported before from tortoises. Seventy three per cent (73%) of direct examination of the scales were positive but this exam did not allow the identification of the fungi. It seems therefore that the lesions of the shell are colonized by saprobic fungi and that the keratinophilic fungi are not present more often than the others. Various digestive parasites were reported, including Helminths (Oxyuridae and Atractidae in 61.82% of the tortoises, ascaridoids in 10.92% and cestodes in 3.63% of them) and Protozoa (Flagellates in 79.63% of the tortoises and Rhizopodes in 46.3% of them). Anthleminthic treatment of the tortoises harbouring Oxyuridae and Atractidae seems usefullness.
