Abstract |
Until the Middle Ages the European pond turtle lived in whole Europe, like in Austria. But over-exploitation and draining of wetlands minimized the population size. New scientific DNA-research shows that the Austrian Emys orbicularis population in the Danube Wetlands in Lower Austria east of Vienna is an endemic cytochrome - B haplotype. But illegal release of Red-cared Slider and turtles from other countrys endangers more and more the home ranges of the native European pond turtles and their behaviour. Field research the last years show that the population size of Red-eared Slider grows up as high as the population size of native European pond turtle is. The exotic turtles are also a problem for fishermen because of their feeding behaviour learned by human in captivity.
