Abstract
Testudinidae Testudo hermanni hermanni Information on wildfire effects on Mediterranean vertebrates is nowadays considerable. Varied aspects of bird ecology in relation to fire are already known, but less about mammals, and only concrete examples on fish, amphibians and reptiles. Assessment of fire impact depends on animal community, temporal scale, sample design and habitats considered in each study; as well as fire features and criteria of assessment (species richness, diversity, biogeographical rarity, level of threat…). Despite such a number of possibilities, everything indicates that animal communities, and especially bird communities, show strong resilience to the disturbance, which is why fire does not induce drastic changes in them. Among the reasons for this resilience we suggest, in perching birds: the rapid regeneration of Mediterranean vegetation; individual site tenacity together with a certain behavioural plasticity; the use of habitat patches in the burnt landscape; and a strong colonising ability. A few papers consider the effects of postfire forest management on birds and mammals. Several forest management recommendations respecting wildlife can be suggested from their conclusions.
