Abstract |
Trachemys scripta scripta elegans Emys orbicularis A study of a population of stripe-necked terrapin (Mauremys leprosa) was carried out in the Llobregat River, in the area of the municipality of Abrera, NE Spain. The studied section of the river had a length of 4140 meters of winding route, included in a natural protected area, called EIN Riu Llobregat, with a predominance of poplar groves. The river was characterized by type of section throughout the studied area. The activity of turtles was detected from mid-February to mid-November and it was not reduced during the summer. The use of space is not uniform with a marked preference for river stretches with a certain depth and low water velocity. Sixty eight turtles were captured using adapted fish traps and were marked before released at the same location. Biometric data collection, including sex determination, had taken for each animal. Using mark-recapture method, a population size of 100 ± 11 individuals was estimated. The sex-ratio was 2:1 in favor of males. The distribution of age classes shows that the population is well structured. Reproduction has not been confirmed, although the number of breeding females was high. The lack of captures of newborn and individuals with a winter age as well as the low number of captured juveniles suggested that recruitment rate is low.
