Abstract |
Midland painted turtles inhabiting southeastern Michigan probably are active from 1 March until 1 December. Measurable increases in length occur between 1 June and 31 August, although individuals may grow during only part of that period; growth is initiated after the water temperature remains above 15 C for the summer. Shedding begins in early July among the younger animals and is terminated by 1 September in most cases. As animals mature, initiation of shedding is delayed, and the entire process takes longer, sometimes lasting into the next spring. Shedding takes place only once during any year.
