Abstract |
Massive trade of exotic freshwater turtles as pets and their posterior release in natural rivers, may cause a damaging invasion for autochthonous species. We studied a total of 228 exotic freshwater turtles, that came from captivity, as well as databases of the recovery centres for endangered fauna in Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa and Álava. In the Basque Country, these pets are abandoned after an average of 6 years in captivity, with an annual peak in April, June and July. Their good acclimation, the female biased sex-ratio (9 females : 1 male) and their high rate of survival, might make them potential invasive species. However, there are evidences of difficulties in the reproduction of the species in the Basque Country, hence limiting their invasive potential to the direct impact of released specimens. • KEY WORDS: Trachemys scripta elegans, exotic species, invasions, conservation, reproduction, Basque Country.
