Abstract
Our survey has been conducted by means of captures, markings and recaptures and has dealt with part of the population of European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) from the marsh of Brouage (Charente-Maritime, France). From 1994 to 1997 we have marked individually 345 turtles and proceeded with 3 786 observations and reobservations. If - on the whole - the turtles studied over a few years finally come out as sedentary whatever their sex, the recapture of some individuals wich had been marked between 1982 and 1986, has however revealed a strong emigration of adult males. Growth is very quick during the first initial years : sexual maturity comes toward the age of 11-12 among females and the age of 8-9 among males. This coincides with the cessation of statural growth. Density is rather strong : around 100 individuals per miles of ditch. The sex-ratio is slightly in favour of the male population. Immature individuals represent about 30 % of total stock. Pond turtles are active from february to october. The mating season coincides almost to the day with the yearly period of activity. Females lay their eggs from early may to mid-july. Some females even lay twice a year. The newly born emerge mainly in spring, but this also occurs towards the end of summer. Predatory feeding on eggs or newly born is very substantial. Newly hatched individuals born in some laying sites however have a better chance of survival than others.
