A study was conducted to determine if Terrapene carolina carolina (eastern box turtle) has a preference for habitat containing certain species of shrubs and herbaceous plants. Forty-nine thread surveys were conducted on ten turtles in a 45x45m grid. There was an average of 4.8 visits to each plot in the grid. Plots that consisted of at least 50% bare ground were visited an average of 3.2 times, and plots in which at least 50% of the area was covered by plants less than one meter tall were visited an average of 7.1 times. Plots containing Boehmeria cylindrica (false nettle), Campsis radicans (trumpet creeper), Rosa multiflora (multiflora rose), Rhododendron periclymenoides (pinkster), and Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel) were visited an average of 13.3, 11.3, 5.5, 3.8, and 0.7 times respectively. These results show that T. c. carolina has a general preference for areas with dense plant cover, and they may have a specific preference for B. cylindrica, C. radicans, and R. multiflora and an aversion to K. latifolia.
