Abstract
The Illinois mud turtle Kinosternon flavescens spooneri is a relict subspecies confined to remnant sand prairies in the North American Midwest. The main threats to the turtle include habitat alteration, primarily from agriculture, winter kill, lowered water tables, and genetic problems due to low population size. This paper reviews the status and biology of the sub-species and concludes that the Illinois mud turtle is biologically endangered and will remain so unless its habitat is preserved and managed over a long time period.
