Abstract
Testudinidae In 1989 a shipment of 300 yellow-headed tortoises was seized at Amsterdam airport. Most of the animals were in very bad health and died despite veterinary treatment. The rest was given to experienced amateurs. The author got a male which was later determined as Indotestudo forstenii. The author summarizes the diagnostic features of the three yellow-headed tortoise species (I. elongata, I. travancorica and I. forstenii). Not much is known on the natural history of the Celebes tortoise I. forstenii, because this species was not distinguished from I. travancorica until recently. These facts on climate and habitat are summarized. With the help of the Dutch Turtle/Tortoise Society the author later got one I. forstenii female from the same shipment. He gives detailed information on husbandry and breeding of this species. Males and females, and even juveniles, are very aggressive towards conspecifics. The nesting season is from October until about June. Each season several clutches are deposited, consisting of one big egg per clutch, sometimes two. The interval between clutches is usually 40 to 75 days. Until September 2003, 15 eggs from this breeding pair have hatched. Some hatchlings had scute abnormalities of the carapace, which could be due to high temperatures in the first quarter of the incubation. The author hopes that in the future there will be a larger, international group of tortoise enthusiasts, who keep and breed this highly interesting species.
