Abstract
Stranding and captures of sea turtles in the surroundings of the Ebro Delta (NE Spain) between 1984 and 2001. – Between 1984 and 2001 data were collected on the sea turtles stranded or accidentally captured in the Tarragona zone, particularly around the Ebro Delta. Most references are of loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta (n = 101), but there is also information on green turtles, Chelonia mydas (n = 4). The individuals captured alive were marked with metallic tags in the carapace or in the forelimbs (n = 20). Two individuals were recaptured and an individual marked in Sardegna (Italy) was also captured. Most references of loggerhead turtles were obtained between April and August, but this species can also be observed at other times of the year, even in winter. Mean curved carapace length (CCLn-t) was 446.1 ± 142.5 mm for loggerhead turtles (n = 73) and 415.5 ± 106.4 mm for green turtles (n = 4). Adult loggerhead turtles represented only 8.2% of the observations. Of all the observations, 53.4% corresponded to stranded individuals that died from unknown causes and 39.8% to accidental captures by fisheries, especially trawling boats. From the results obtained it follows that the loggerhead turtle population in the Ebro Delta surroundings is mainly formed by juveniles. As loggerheads remain in these waters through winter, it is suggested that this area is not only a feeding site but also a wintering site. The green turtle presents few references for the Ebro Delta coasts, and it is represented by juvenile and sub-adult individuals.
