Abstract
Testudinidae European tortoises of the genus Testudo are becoming seriously threatened mainly due to habitat urbanization and illicit pet trade. In this study we tested the cross-amplifications of 23 microsatellite genetic markers (isolated from Testudinidae and Emydidae) in five (sub)species of the genus Testudo. A subset of 8-10 polymorphic loci was defined across the tested taxa, providing new tools for hybrid assignment, population genetic studies and parental tests.
