Abstract
Testudinidae In most cases, there is no proof that reproducing populations of Testudo graeca exist on Sardinia. Most published records may simply be due to escaped pets. However, perhaps on the small peripheral islet Mal di Ventre (West Sardinia) an established small colony may exist. Testudo hermanni occurs in a good density at low altitudes in the Sardinian garrigue. The specimens examined by the authors (13 males, 35 females) are fair sized tortoises compared to other western Mediterranean populations. The largest tortoises of both sexes nearly reached 20 cm carapace length (straight line measurements). The colouration especially of the carapace varies distinctly more than in T. h. hermanni from southern France. Sporadically occurring light specimens may be the reason for the earlier published records of T. h. boettgeri for Sardinia. However, without any doubt, Sardinian Hermann's tortoises are much closer related to the other western Mediterranean populations than to any eastern Mediterranean one. Sardinian T. hermanni are treated here as belonging to the nominate subspecies. But further studies are necessary to investigate whether more than two subspecies exist in the Mediterranean or not.
