Abstract |
This work was carried out in six municipalities in the Department of Sucre, jurisdiction of CARSUCRE, in order to determine the conservation status and habitat preferences of Batrachemys dahli. Additionally, habitat was characterized from a biotic and not biotic point of view. A total of 68 individuals of Batrachemysdahli were captured, whose measures did not match the maximum sizes registered in other studies, possibly because the largest individuals are usually captured for their consumption. The aquatic and riparian vegetation coincided with that reported for other departments where the species lives, however it was not abundant. The measurement of the physicochemical conditions of water revealed critical values of dissolved oxygen and changes in chloride concentration and salinity, which does not seem to directly affect B. dahli, but could affect the biota that constitute their diet. The animals presented injuries that could be due to natural predation or competition with other turtles. The small population size indicate that the species in the department presents a very critical situation that requires urgent conservation measures such as building more dams, "ex situ" breeding, reforestation with riverine native species and environmental education work in the region.
