Abstract
Testudinidae Demographic Assessment of the Western Hermann’s Tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) in the Garraf Natural Park (2007- 2010) The Western Hermann’s Tortoise has been present in the Garraf Park since 1992 as a result of a reintroduction project. So far, 3,419 tortoises have been released into the park, 1,110 of which were babies. In addition, two hundred newborn tortoises have been identified. On the basis of the Conservation Plan, the aim of the study is to assess their reintroduction into this territory and find out about the population’s evolution; also studied is the first area where 1,120 tortoises were released. It was estimated that the tortoise population was 1,611 in 2007, 1,477 in 2008 and 2009 and, finally, 1,411 in 2010. The fact that there were 12.59 tortoises per hectare in 2010 – a positive figure in terms of their status, especially when compared to other populations in Spain – means that an optimistic reading can be made of the study.
