Abstract
Testudinidae The activity patterns and spatial behaviour of 12 adult specimens of Testudo hermanni hermanni have been studied by radio-tracking techniques in a coastal area of Southern Tuscany. The yearly horne range (obtained by the minimum convex polygon method at 90%) varies between 1.75 and 3.25 ha for males and from 0.89 and 4.17 ha for females. For each individual, seasonal home ranges broadly overlap. Hibernation, aestivation and ovideposition sites are chosen within the individual 's home range. During the 1993 winter, two males and two females moved over short distances, thereby changing their hibernation sites. The activity peak occurs in spring and is sharper for females. Activity slows down in summer. In the summer of 1993, two males and one female aestivated. Activity resumes in autumn, particularly for males. The great variability observed among these tortoises makes very difficult to describe a general profile of their spatial behaviour and seasonal activity patterns.
