Abstract
Testudinidae The herpetofauna of the Campagna Romana between the Natural Reserve of Marcigliana and the Cornicolani Mountains; a revision of data This contribution summarizes the state of the current knowledge on the Amphibians and Reptiles of the Campagna Romana, between the Natural Reserve of Marcigliana and the offshoot of the Cornicolani Mountains, north-east of Rome city area. This small territory is highly fragmented, with spots of mesoxerophilous wood, cultivated land, urban and suburban areas. Data collected during about forty years together with the data of the quoted bibliography are discussed and the presence of 26 species is considered, one of which is the alien turtle Trachemys scripta. Among the other 25 species, some are of relevant interest from the ecological and conservational viewpoints; Salamandrina perspicillata, Bufo balearicus, Rana dalmatina, R. italica, Hyla intermedia, Anguis fragilis, Coronella girondica, Elaphe quatuorlineata, Natrix tessellata; the autochthony of Testudo hermanni needs confirmation. The distribution of each species in the study area is integrated with eco-ethological data. Species richness, also compared with those of Amphibians and Reptiles of Latium (Central Italy) and the whole Italian territory is high, considering the small extension of this area. A possible integration of the ecological network system is discussed and a “buffer zone” is postulated with the aim to preserve habitat and zoocenosis of particular interest.
