Abstract
Abstract: The European pond turtle Emys orbicularis (L.) is an endangered species in Poland. As mortality rate of younger (smaller) specimens of turtles are higher then of older (bigger) ones, during an active protection programme neonates of the turtle are bred and bigger and stronger are released. Eggs and hatchlings of the European pond turtle were collected in central Poland (the Radom district) from nest chambers in September 1997 and 1998. The turtles were housed bred in aquaterrariums (temperature of water 20°C and fed on natural, mostly living, food items). After hatching in 1997 (5th September to 2nd October; period of incubation 97,4 days, SD = 6,6; for N = 188 from 17 chambers) the turtles were measured every four weeks. During the first three months they grew very slowly: from the straight carapace length (SCL) 26,49 mm (SD = 1,05; N = 81) and body mass (BM) 5,26g (SD = 0,47; N = 81) on 9–15th September 1997 to SCL 27,51g (SD = 1,75; N = 202) and BM 5,60g (SD = 0,99; N = 202) on 13th December 1997. From January they started to grow rapidly in asymptotic size and on 25th May 1998 SCL was 46,36 mm (SD = 4,12; N = 192) and BM 21,26 g (SD = 4,66; N = 191). On 11th of September 1998 44 turtles were collected from nest chambers, the next 17 hatched to 23rd September. They were marked individually and measured every 2 weeks. On 17th September 1998 SCL 26,59 mm (SD = 0,96; N = 60) and BM 5,04g (SD = 0,49; N = 60). They started to grow rapidly earlier then the ones in the previous year and on 2nd December SCL was 30,01 mm (SD = 1,68; N = 61) and BM 7,57 g (SD = 1,07; N = 61). On 19 May 1999 SCL was 38,04 mm (SD = 4,15; N = 52) and BM 14,70 g (SD = 4,12; N = 52). At the end of May 1998 and 1999 upon release into natural habitat, the young were the same size as where turtles in natural environment after one or two seasons.
