Abstract
The impact of fishing on Emys orbicularis was studied by radiotracking and capturing in two wild populations in the Department of Is`ere (France) from 2000 to 2002. One population occurs in a totally protected pond and the other is distributed over a pond complex frequented by approximately 2,500 anglers per year for recreational fishing. X-rays of 17 females captured in June 2001 in the latter site showed that three had a fishhook stuck in the oesophagus. Recreational fishing was also responsible for the death of 20% of the radiotracked turtles there (n = 20). All deaths occurred in a pond where nightfishing is allowed. Turtles were either entangled in lost fishing line and drowned or mistreated by anglers. In the protected pond none of the monitored turtles died. Our data illustrate that the current management of recreational fishing conflicts with E. orbicularis conservation and highlight the fatal consequences of nightfishing.
