Abstract
The Pond slider (Trachemys scripta) is an invasive species that could be competing with the Mediterranean turtle (Mauremys leprosa). The aim of this study was to analyze the relation between the distributions of both species and to find zones within the Mediterranean turtle range that are more sensitive to the invasion by the Pond slider in the province of Malaga. We analyzed environmental factors that can influence the occurrence of both species following three steps: (1) we obtained an eco-geographical model of distribution for each species modelling both species separately, (2) we obtained an eco-geographical model of distribution for T. scripta only in the range of M. leprosa to determine the potentiality for invading the area of M. leprosa, (3) we obtained a sinecology model for T. scripta using the ecogeographical model of M. leprosa as predictor variable. A value of favourability overlap for both species was calculated in distribution area of M. leprosa, and the mean favourability for each species was calculated in the different overlap intervals. The areas of low favourability for M. leprosa were also of low favourability for T. scripta, as the environmental characteristics of those areas are not suitable for the presence of aquatic turtles. The area of study was classified in: grids with low overlap value, in which favourability for M. leprosa was higher than for T. scripta; in this area the native species could be slowing the setting of the exotic species; grids with intermediate overlap value, where the favourability for both species was intermediate, and T. scripta could displace M. leprosa, these grids being of more concern for the conservation of the native species; and grids with high overlap value, where both species have high values of favourability, and both species could coexist.
