Abstract
Ten Emys orbicularis were radiotracked once per week during the winter 2000/2001 and ten new individuals during the winter 2001/2002. We observed that turtles concentrate in a small area for hibernation, usually in shallow water. In both winters the same water body was used, and some turtles migrated over considerable distances to reach their hibernation site. These movements may include overland migrations. Vegetation cover of overwintering sites varied from 80–100%. Overwintering sites were typically associated with three plant communities (Salicion cinereae, Phragmition, Magnocaricion). Overwintering habits of turtles conflict with current pond management practices. Salicion cinereae, the most important overwintering microhabitat, is frequently cut over winter. Moreover, often the water level is lowered in winter. Both seriously threaten the survival of overwintering pond turtles.
