Abstract
The Natural Area of the Banyoles Lake, declared an Area of Natural Interest (PEIN) and which offers one of the most important hydro geologic ecosystems in the Mediterranean region of the Iberian Peninsula, encompasses the Lake and the set of ponds around it. The area has been benefiting from the Programme LIFE+ Natura through the project: Improving the Habitats and Species of Banyoles Natura 2000: A Demonstrative Project, for the period 2010-2013. The main objective of the Banyoles Lake’s project is to carry out a widespread intervention to fight, slow down and reverse the decline of species and habitats of community interest, being caused by invasive species in this area. This is being done by controlling invasive species (Trachemys scripta) and strengthening the populations as European pond terrapin (Emys orbicularis orbicularis). During the first two years of the project, 500 invasive terrapins were approximately captured and 75 specimens of European pond terrapin, breed at the Centre de Reproducció de Tortugues de l’Albera, were left. 13 specimens were radiotracked, and a good adaptation and high site fidelity was observed.
