Testudinidae Local abundance patterns of the spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca graeca) in Southeastern Spain. The individual abundance in a local population is, in general, one of the most interesting variables in ecological studies (MCCALLUM, 2000). In this study, 38 spur-thighed tortoise populations, spread throughout all their distribution area in southeastern Spain, were analyzed, with the objective of determine their relative and absolute abundance. Relative abundance varied from 0 to 1.40 tortoises per survey and hour. Absolute abundance estimates ranged from 0.36 to 16.24 individuals per hectare.
