Abstract |
Testudinidae In the tortoise Testudo horsfieldi Gray the plasma concentrations of thyroxine and triiodothyronine are strongly temperature dependent, the levels of both hormones being lowest within a seasonal normal activity range (23–33° cloacal) and highest outside such a thermic interval. Anoxia-induced high levels of T3 and T4 are consistent with those found in speciments under thermal stress. A new hypothesis on the phylogeny of physiological thermoregulation is put forward.
