Abstract
At present, seven semi-cryptic species of Asian leaf turtles (Cyclemys) in two morphologically differentiated groups are distinguished, but these have yet to be evaluated by the IUCN. In 2009, a single Cyclemys turtle, tentatively identified as C. aff. atripons, was found in the Kbal Spean River, in Phnom Kulen National Park, Northwestern Cambodia. Subsequent surveys and research in 2010, 2011 and 2012, including turtle trapping, mark-recapture analysis and radio tracking, indicated a breeding population of at least 58 individuals (hatchlings, juveniles and adults) in the river and shed light on some aspects of the ecology of these little known turtles. Genetic analysis of tissue samples is planned to clarify the identity of the turtles at Kbal Spean.
