Abstract |
Massive predation of the otter (Lutra lutra) on the striped-necked terrapin (Mauremys leprosa). During the winter of 2006 some cases of massive mortality of the Spanish terrapin (Mauremys leprosa) were detected. Observation of freshly dead animals indicated that they were killed by otters (Lutra lutra). The number of animals involved ranged from six individuals in the northern population (Salamanca), 85 terrapins in the southern population (Cordoba), to more than 200 in the Toledo population. Otters consumed the most accesible parts of the terrapins, mainly legs and tails but also heads. Our hypothesis is that otters use terrapins as an alternative prey when no other resources are available. This fact could be a serious threat to survival of M. leprosa in some parts of its distribution range.
