Abstract
Testudinidae Geochelone The study developed a plan of Zootechnic Management and Adaptation of the exhibition of the Morrocoy Turtle (Chelonoidis carbonaria). It evaluated the effects of controlling temperature over their behavior. For this purpose, the enclosure was modified to augment the temperature, which was under the optimum zone required for this specie (from 25 to 30 ºC). The enclosure is located in the Fundación Zoológico Santacruz (Mesitas del Colegio – Cundinamarca - Colombia) and the intervention was performed in this location so that the results obtained from this research can be extrapolated and help prevent the extinction of the specie. Nineteen individuals were part of the research (11 males and 8 females), which represented the totality of individuals of the specie in the exhibition at the start-point of the study. Six tasks were performed with the individuals: (1) A behavioral study in which the seven most important observed behavioral categories were taken into account: sexual behavior, non-visibility, outside water inactivity, displacement, igloo inactivity, feeding, and in-water displacement. The data analysis shows that four behaviors changes significantly in duration after the process: non-visibility, outside water inactivity, displacement and igloo inactivity. (2) Evaluation of the five freedoms: carried out before and after the process, it allowed establishing the parameters that were affecting the individual‟s welfare. Before the changes were performed to the enclosure, eight parameters were being affected versus zero after the set was modified. (3) Nutritional proposal: a diet was proposed according to specie‟s requirements. (4) Morrocoy Turtle handler‟s manual. (5) Training for the Foundation‟s workers. (6) Children‟s story. All these tasks were done under the zootechnic framework „s plan for this specie.
