Abstract |
Testudinidae An adult Hermann's tortoise, Testudo hermanni, was examined because of a prolapsed phallus and was subsequently found, on whole-body radiography and transplastron celiotomy, to have 12 intraoviductal shelled ova, a ruptured oviductal wall, and yolk-associated serocoelomitis. The ovaries, oviducts, and prolapsed phallic organ were excised and the contaminated coelom was flushed. Histopathological examination confirmed the prolapsed pha s to be a normal penis. From the results of a thorough exploration of the tortoise's coelomic organs and the histological characteristics of the phallus, it appears that this animal was a pseudohermaphrodite.
