Abstract
Testudo hermanni graeca Testudinidae Gea Chelonia Foundation is the only NGO in Bulgaria based and dedicated to tortoises’ conservation and research. It manages the only Rescue and Rehabilitation Tortoise Centre (RRTC) in Bulgaria. It is a sanctuary and specialized ex-situ center for both tortoise species – Testudo hermanni boettgeri and Testudo graeca. Main goals of the centre are to achieve international attention from similar organizations, to introduce their experience in Bulgaria, in order to bring tortoise conservation measures on adequate level. Specific activities related to the Testudo hermanni are: research over ecology and biology of the species; restoration and stabilization of the populations through reintroduction program of young (captive bred) and confiscated specimen; rescuing specimens from territories which are to be destroyed from human activities; medical treatment of sick and injured specimen; popularization of the necessity of protection of tortoises and their habitats. During the past three years, the centre implemented projects for preventing the decline of the populations of Testudo hermanni, and habitats deterioration in the Bulgarian Black Sea Coastal area due to the expanding resort construction and tourist pressure. Its team attempted to prevent the further disturbance and eradication of specie through their relocation in preserved natural habitats in protected areas, monitoring the tortoises in the new areas and further estimation of their adaptation success via radiotelemetry; raise public awareness in tortoises’ conservation and increase the chances of maintaining stable populations in the new habitats.
