Abstract
In this study I discuss the responsible use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and the standards necessary for the diagnosis: Sepsis, because in reptile medicine both the evidence based use of antibiotics as well as the state of the art diagnosis of a sepsis seems to be often ignored. Here I describe an investigation of the causes leading to a red plastron and/or carapace during and after hibernation in European tortoises in captivity with artificial hibernation under conditions of excessive substrate humidity. While red plastrons and/or carapaces represent the visible signs of this pathological and reversible condition the real threats are shown by changes in liver histology caused by the accumulation of toxic metabolites without the involvement of a sepsis. This clearly indicates that the use of antibiotics in that condition just increases the toxic burden for liver metabolism instead of treating a non-present sepsis which in most cases results in the immediate death of the tortoise. In addition, I discuss and show appropriate measurements for the treatment and reversal of this pathology and discuss some aspects how the development of this disease could be minimized or even prevented.
