Abstract |
Testudinidae The present study was carried out over a period of 6 months, from February until July 2010. Individuals belonging to four autochthonous species were studied in order to find gastrointestinal parasites. All individuals of the terrestrial species Testudo graeca and Testudo hermanni, were captive and they showed the highest prevalence in parasites. On the contrary, fewer individuals of the aquatic specimens, Emys orbicularis and Mauremys leprosa, were parasitized, and no significant differences were found between captive and wild individuals. As for parasite frequency, Pharyngodonidae (45.99%) was the most prevalent, followed by Trematoda (15.33%), Coccidia (10.22%) and lastly, Atractidae (2.92%).
