Abstract
Testudinidae Geochelone An outbreak of mortality in a captive breeding program of Madagascan radiated tortoises (Astrochelys radiata) is presented. These tortoises were bred with the aim of releasing them in the wild on Rodríguez Island (where the ancient giant tortoises disappeared two centuries ago, the action is known as “Rewild”). This oputbreak occured during the years 2011 and 2012, and hatchlings 2 and 3 years of age died. Urine retention, coccidial parasitism and infection by mixed bacteria were observed. HIstopathological analysis showed renal disease in all affected animals. According to the histologic results, no viral infection or alimentary intoxication were suspected. Treatment was carried out using deparasitation with metronidazol and levamisol, antibiotic therapy with enrofloxacin and improving the captive conditions (disinfection of enclosures, sunny facilities and diet modifications). The outbreak was stopped and in June 2012 no more deaths were noted. This outbreak shows the possibility of renal disease as multifactorial disease, where husbandry, infection, parasitism and species idiosincrasy could be involved.
