Abstract
The Turtle and Terrapin Population in the Foix River: A Review of Ten Years of Management Over the last ten years, 169 Mediterranean pond turtles (Mauremys leprosa) autochthonous to the Foix River have been marked. A statistical study was set up to determine the rate of growth, structure, distribution and evolution of the population of these autochlhonous turtles. During this period, two European pond terrapins (Emys orbicularis) were also caught. Genetic analysis showed that these terrapins were from Andalusia, consequently they were removed from the reservoir and placed for safekeeping in the premises of the CRARC. In addition, a total of 526 exotic turtles and terrapins of seven different species were removed. Most of them (500) were red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta). The possibility of environmental conflict with the Mediterranean pond turtle, such as the introduction of disease and competition over the best sites for basking and trophic resources, or with other water fauna in the reservoir means that their presence is an obvious threat.
