Abstract
Testudinidae During four winters (1976-1980), water was observed more than 100 times in burrows in Leon County, Florida and Thomas County, Georgia. Water occurred in burrows as early as 8 October (1976) and as late as 11 March (1977 and 1978) for periods up to 48 consecutive days; several occupied burrows contained ground water at least once every winter during the study. I observed tortoises totally or partially submerged in water most of the time that water was present, indicating a preference for immersion even when water levels were low in burrows. Burrow flooding may be common in colonies of Gopherus polyphemus.
