Abstract
Testudinidae A conservationist traslocation effects on movement patterns of spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) in South-Eastern Spain. The increasing development of socioeconomic activities especially new resident areas, infrastructures and agriculture transformations, can cause an important habitat loss for threatened species, as it is the case of the spur-thighed tortoise Testudo graeca in southeastern Spain. Relocation of animals is sometimes proposed as a mitigation measure in environmental impact studies. However, the effectiveness of this conservation action has not been studied in detail so far. This work has studied the movement patterns of tortoises affected by a relocation programme. Here, six relocated and six control (non-relocated) females, which were in a similar place a few kilometres away, were monitored during 2 years using radio-transmitters. Relocated tortoises carry out large erratic movements which were decreasing along the following spring after the relocation. During this spring, relocated tortoises scored larger home ranges than non-relocated. This behaviour becomes softer the second year after the relocation when, although no statistics differences were found, the mean distances scored and home range sizes covered by the relocated tortoises were still larger than control individuals. Two out of six relocated females shown homing behaviour. The results of this study allow to make some suggestions, mainly related to relocation distances and the proper optimum habitat area that these actions require, that could be taken into account in future relocations of Testudo graeca.
