Abstract |
The Lower Willamette Valley in Oregon, USA has lost much of its freshwater turtle habitat in the past 150 years. This study presents a population viability analysis (PVA) using available data from one western painted turtle (Chyrsemus picta bellii) population in Smith & Bybee wetlands in the Columbia Slough. I hope to provide conservationists with insight about one quantitative tool for risk assessment and analyzing population dynamics by discussing a sensitivity analysis of the PVA model. Currently available data indicates that the population is decreasing. All PVA simulations suggest that these populations face more than a 10% probability of extinction within 100 years. Therefore, this population meets the World Conservation Fund (IUCN) criteria for “Threatened” status at the very least. Monitoring efforts should prioritize accurate population counts in order to make best use of this PVA model.
