On June 21th 2000, an adult female of the European pond turtle Emys orbicularis orbicularis (LINNAEUS, 1758) (Reptilia, Testudines, Emydidae) was found at the Alte Elbe near Magdeburg, OT Randau. Additionally to a short description of the historical records from the area, the question of possibly still existing native populations is investigated. Because of the especially critical situation of the species, a mapping and research programme is suggested to obtain certainty about the taxonomic status. This is a prerequisite for any preservation initiatives. For the already planned revitalisation measures at the Alte Elbe, suggestions are made considering the habitat demands of Emys orbicularis.
