Emys orbicularis About a quarter of the turtle sample shifted between ponds, with no signifìcant difference between sexes, either in the total number of shift or in the shift distances. Larger individuals of both sexes shifted more than smaller ones. Shifting occurred during all seasons. In particular, the turtles moved toward temporary ponds during fall and toward permanent ponds in late spring. Turtles inhabiting temporary ponds, when these become dry either moved to permanent ponds or underwent aestivation. Males aestivated in a larger proportion than females. About 40% of females oviposited in 1997, but two did it twice and one oviposited once in each of two successive years.
