Abstract
In Navarra there were only sightings and/or non systematic captures of pond turtles, but no population analysis of this species was made before now. In this study two European pond turtle populations located in protected places, 10 km far one from each other, were analyzed biometrically. Most of the individuals were captured using shrimp and floating traps, but also some individuals were captured by hand. During almost one year, 71 E. orbicularis were captured in Villafranca pond, inside the Badina Escudera LIC, about 1.5 km long, while 61 individuals were captured in only four days in a small pond (40 m) inside the Bardenas Reales Natural Park. We can assume that Bardenas Reales population has an important density of terrapins, because there are several places with presence of them further that the sampled pond. Even more, captures show that 49.2% of the individuals have their carapaces smaller than 120 mm. Although in Villafranca pond there were located several individuals, only 12.7% of them were below 120 mm. The sex ratio is near 1:1 in both populations. The sexual dimorphism is confirmed in populations from Navarre: Females are bigger than males, and plastron/carapace index is also bigger in females.
