Abstract
The rapid development of a material culture in China, produced by the economic expansion of recent years, has led people to become more aware of their personal health. The consequences of this to the turtle, whose value as a medicinal remedy has been exaggerated to the point of fabrication, threaten to be catastrophic. Not only are turtles devoid of magical healing power, but their incorrect use also has the potential to do real harm.
