Abstract |
Testudinidae During September and October 1996, the Central Veterinary Laboratory received samples of liver and spleen from Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni) and leopard tortoises (Geochelone pardalis) from a tortoise breeding colony in south Yorkshire, UK. The colony had experienced an outbreak of disease associated with ocular and nasal discharge and intermittent paralysis resulting in 100% mortality in a group of 29 tortoises. PM examination showed emaciation, muscle wasting, thickening of coelomic membranes and enlargement of the liver and spleen. Histopathology showed widespread lymphoproliferative changes in various organs and pancreatitis and tracheitis. In November of the same year, a Horsfield's tortoise (T. horsfieldii), from Mid-Glamorgan, with stomatitis, was also examined. Herpesvirus-like particles were seen in 9 of the 12 samples submitted from the Yorkshire colony when examined by electron microscopy. All spleen samples demonstrated these particles. No particles were seen in 3 of the 6 liver samples. The average particle size was 105 nm diameter. Papilloma-like particles were seen in lung-wash samples from the Horsfield's tortoise, with an average diameter of 49 nm. This is thought to be the first report of herpesvirus particles in Hermann's and leopard tortoises and papilloma-like particles in Horsfield's tortoises in the UK.
