Abstract
Testudinidae Relieable species’ distribution maps are essential for management conservation purposes. Assessing the distribution and abundance of species of low detectability is a dificult task. In the present work we build an abundance model of the spur-thighed tortoise in the province of Almeria based on species-habitat relationships. Information about presence/absence and abundance were obtained by interviews with shepherds. Starting form these interviews, we obtained a relative abundance index with a resolution of 1km2. First, we modeled the species’ distribution in the province of Almeria just using climate variables. The resulting distribution area has 1300 km2 and was mainly ruled by minimum extreme temperatures and autumn rainfall. Secondly, we modeled the abundance of the tortoise inside the climatic distribution area using variables related to climate, lithology, relief and land uses. Variables with the most explanatory power were climate descriptors of minimum extreme temperatures and autumn rainfall and variables related to volcanic and schist lithology and aspect at a large scale. Finally, we transformed the relative abundance index to absolute values. For this purpose, we made linear transects in a subset of 1km2 cells where information from shepherds was available. Absolute abundance (tortoise/ha), calculated using distance sampling analysis, ranged between 0 and 16 tortoise/ha.
