Abstract
The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) has been regarded as a potentially native species on the Cantabrian strip. However, Mauremys leprosa and several allien taxa (mainly Trachemys scripta elegans and T. scripta scripta) are nowadays more abundant and widespread than the European pond turtle. The origin of Mauremys leprosa is unclear, as the observed individuals could be the remnants of native populations or come from uncontrolled translocations. Exotic taxa are nowadays the most abundant, as a result of uncontrolled releases. For the last five years we have intensively investigated the presence of different taxa of native and exotic terrapins in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. We also closely monitored the terrapin populations in the Bolúe wetland (Getxo, Bizkaia). During this work we found a captured individual of Trachemys scripta scripta in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve in 2005. This fact has been further supported by the finding of several yearlings of this species in the Bolúe wetland during spring 2006. In this same wetland, we captured a newborn individual of Emys orbicularis in spring 2004, and three young individuals of the same species after this. We provide accurate data of these captures, as well as other data such as body size and the characteristics of the habitat where Emys orbicularis newborns were found.
