Abstract
TThe SOS GALAPAGOS project began in 2001, when the Environment Office at Getxo Town Hall (Biscay) decided to control Florida terrapins (Trachemys scripta elegans) introduced by uncontrolled releases at Bolue wetland (a 9 ha, freshwater coastal wetland). The project aims to control alien terrapins, monitor putative native species (Mauremys leprosa and Emys orbicularis) and inform local people of the hazards posed by uncontrolled releases of allien species into the wetland. Terrapins are captured using a range of trap types, baits and traping schedules, coupled with a regular schedule of trapping campaigns (spring, summer and autumn, 10 trapping days each) that allows for quantification of exotic terrapin abundance in each of these periods. Captured individuals of exotic species are removed from the wetland, while those of native species (68 to date) are marked with P.I.T. tags and peripheric sign codes. We show data on number of captures for each taxon, the success of different trapping methods and the abundance of exotic pond turtles at different seasons of the year. These data are used to estimate the number of released individuals during the study period in the Bolue wetland.
